"Tough Guise"

In class we watched a video on the stereotype of men, and why men act the way they do. Before watching this movie I asked myself why men thought that certain things make them masculine that women do not. Jackson Kats, who is an anti-violence counselor talked about how men think and why they act the way they do. He talked about how even from a young age guys are given toys with huge muscles, and even guns showing that this powerful toy was masculine. In the video he showed pictures of toys from the 70's and the SAME toy figures that we have today. They were the same character (batman, superman, etc) only they had more muscles and were built bigger.  There were many different things that Jackson brought up about why guys do certain things to look masculine. He talked about how guys need to be more vulnerable, and stop putting up this new "pose." There are a few men in the media culture now that do show their vulnerable side and allow themselves to cry to give hugs. Those are the types of men that are masculine to me. The kind of man that can show how he is really feeling and not put up a fake front to people. I really enjoyed this video and i think some men in our culture need to view it themselves!

  1. If you want to read more on Katz' work, you can look at his website: http://www.jacksonkatz.com/. He has all sorts of information there on his project to transform masculinity in America, and how he reaches out to young men.

  2. Do you think guys feel comfortable showing their feelings to other guys? Do you think you would feel comfortable showing your feelings to your friends? I don't think there is anything wrong with a sensitive guy.

  3. I totally agree that this is a must see for ALL MEN in America. They should have to watch this before they have to enlist in the army at 18. The funny thing I got out of the video was although many women say they want a man in touch with their emotions...when you see a grown man cry it just doesnt appear to look right at first becauase we don't see it on a everyday basis...whatcha think?

  4. Yes I agree...I do hear about women wanting their men to be in touch with their emotions but then when they man does cry, they gossip about it, and giggle... I think that if a man cries that should stay between you two.

McKenzie L. I do hear about guys talking to other guys and telling them their real emotions or maybe even crying to them. and yes I show my real feelings to my friends and tell them everything that i'm feeling. I also enjoy a sensitive guy. My article was not about wanting a man who was a "tough guy."
